This blog post is close to my heart,it talks about the story of the most flourishing steel plant of India today under SAIL.From Rags to riches....the title says it all
how a barren land in the heart of Madhya Pradesh transformed into the most flourishing industrial town in central India
in 1956 transformed into
The story of this township dates back to 1956 when the mining process just began and a handful of engineers were brought down from different parts of the country to set up the plant. The engineers were put up in Durg,an adjoining place and were taken in station wagons to the plant. :)
It is intersting to note that the township was established with just 10 quarters and today proudly boasts of 11 sectors and more than 5000 quarters.
The steel plant was setup with Russian collabration and Russians had come down to this far fetched land and helped the engineers setting up this plant, the township still has a Russian complex which shows the solidarity that exists in this small place
When the men of the house were busy slogging their asses off could the women be left behind,In 1961 the women realised that sitting at home and chit-chatting is yielding no good, they then devised their own way to help in the establishment of the society around the steel plant, the social life!
Then came into being the BHILAI MAHILA SAMAJH
Bhilai Mahila samajh employed the women from the lower and backward sections of the society and set up a soap factory where they taught ladies the art of soap making, udyog kendra where the ladies learnt masala making, made uniforms for the plant employees and also set up a ruchira restaurant
The soaps made were sent to the plant to be kept in various depts and the other houses in the township too....this gave the women a first hand experience in managing accounts, being self independent and at the same time helping the society!!!!
slowly shops started coming up, and the then schools and hospitals and the township started getting its shape....the dreams of the handful of engineers started getting closer to reality
Today with an annual production capacity of 3.153 million tonnes,a school run by the steel plant in every sector, 2 hospitals with all facilities and free medical facilities for more than 10000 employees, beautiful wide roads, two clubs with all recreation facilities, a maitri garden setup to strengthen the indo russian friendship and with everything which a good city boasts of,the story of Bhilai is truly a rags to riches story !!!!
