Merchandise

This Diwali I hope we’re all doing the cool thing. Yes, I hope we’re all buying up as many firecrackers as we can lay our hands on and wrap our pockets around.

Sure, our generation has already earned the title of no-good-wastes of time and money. We’re the ATM generation and to us it doesn’t matter whether the money is coming from an actual machine or from the mouths (ugh) of our parents (or so they want to think). I hope we’re not letting them down. We’re living up to all that they believe we are. So I really hope and pray that we’re putting all that money to good use and watching it as it rises up in the billowing clouds of smoke that hang in the air for days and taste of all sorts of pungent chemicals.

Speaking of chemicals; it’s evident how much we loved lab time throughout school and college. We’d just wait and hang around the labs in almost tremulous anticipation of the stinging and sharp smell of sulphurous chemicals. We did, didn’t we? Hoping to smell the test-tube farts, right? Wrong, I think.

But we do love it when we’re watching a moment’s brightness and then have to suffer the long hours of the stench. *sigh* That wonderful firecracker flatulence!

The number of little naked children I see on the road always makes my insides turn. We don’t need them on the road! We need them in our factories! Rolling away their fingers and stuffing their lives into the little paper containers that we need to blow up for our split second satisfaction. We don’t need them in schools! We need to save the government’s superfluous education budget and should have them to be charred to death in little tin shanties that double up as illegal factories! We need them to be worried about money so they become intimately familiar with the concept of the rat race for survival while they’re still in pigtails and baba suits.

            So let’s noise-n, brighten,

            Momentarily frighten

All the dogs and little babies,

            The motorists and old ladies.

Let’s declare war against the air and the trees!

After all who needs those birds and bees?

Let’s just take it all and blow it away

Since the light of a firecracker will always stay!
